India’s Got Latent Controversy

The media says that during his participation in the show India’s Got Latent, Ranveer Allahbadia posed a disturbingly inappropriate question to an applicant:

“Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?”

Furthermore, he made derogatory comments regarding the contestant’s genitals and purportedly offered them two crores to perform an obscene deed. Such comments festered a considerable amount of anger which led to Allahbadia, the anchor Samay Raina, and the other comedians Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija receiving multiple complaints driving a police investigation. 

Legal Matters and Government Actions

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was among the notable figures who paid attention to this controversy resulting in a police report to be filed in Guwahati. Ashish Ray & Pankaj Mishra, advocates of the Bombay High Court, also wrote to the Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phalsankar and Wahid Phalsankar suggesting for stronger actions to be taken against obscenity that disregarded females.

Ranveer Allahbadia’s Apology

Ranveer Allahbadia was severely faced with backlash and was forced to issue a public apology via a video message on X (formerly Twitter). He acknowledged his mistake, saying:

It shouldn’t have come out on India’s Got Latent, however, I shouldn’t have said what I said.” I’m sorry… My comment wasn’t even funny and it wasn’t just inappropriate. Comedy is not my forte. I am just here to say sorry.”

He further added:

“I have heard many of you ask me if this is how I want to be on my platform and obviously this is not how I want to be on the platform.” Neither am I going to provide context, justification or reasoning whatever had happened. I’m just here for an apology.”

And he admitted it was a lapse of judgment, but that he would be more responsible in the future.

“It is watched by old and young people.” I don’t want to be the type of person who doesn’t take that responsibility lightly. Family is the least among things to ever disrespect. This whole experience, what I need to learn is how to use this platform better.

Allahbadia as well said that he had asked the makers of the show to take out the irrelevant part from the video.

Show’s Response

After the scandal, the makers of India’s Got Latent cropped out the questionable portions from the episode. But although the outrage is now raining down, they are still calling for the content regulation to be stricter in digital entertainment.
